Nappy rash affects both children and adults. How can it be effectively treated?

Nappy rash affects both children and adults. How can it be effectively treated?

The claim that nappy rash occurs almost exclusively in young children is widespread but untrue. It often appears on the skin of older children and adults too.

Woman with nappy rash ointments

Nappy rash mainly forms in areas where the skin is delicate and where there is increased perspiration. It is therefore particularly common in the groin, on the genitals, under the breasts and on the thighs. It often also forms in the armpits. Red, irritated skin that itches and burns is unpleasant. What works best for nappy rash?

What to do about nappy rash?

Good hygiene and the use of high-quality, fragrance-free soaps are key in the fight against nappy rash. After each wash, always dry the skin covered with nappy rash and make sure it is exposed to air and can breathe freely. Change small children's nappies frequently or leave them without nappies, and use loose powder or baby powder every time you wash and dry them. Adults should choose light, breathable and loose clothing that allows the affected areas to breathe. This can effectively prevent further chafing.

Various ointments and creams are also suitable and beneficial. There are several options available. One of them is a nappy rash ointment, which can be tried by older children and adults. You can't go wrong with a nappy rash cream either. For mild nappy rash, use a barrier cream from our range. You can supplement the treatment with herbal baths, whose healing and anti-inflammatory effects will contribute to a feeling of relief. If you travel frequently, always have antibacterial wet wipes at hand, wash yourself exclusively with antibacterial soap and pack an ointment for nappy rash in your suitcase just in case.

Herbs that can help

Tips for combating diaper rash can also be found in folk medicine. For example, cold compresses made from calendula infusion can help. Other herbs you can use include agrimony, lavender, horsetail, and sage. Preparation is simple: pour 250 ml of boiling water over one tablespoon of the selected herb and leave to steep for 10 minutes. Apply the prepared mixture to the nappy rash several times a day and remember to dry the area thoroughly afterwards.

When will the nappy rash start to clear up?

Nappy rash should start to subside within two to four days. In some cases, this skin problem may even disappear completely after this time. If there is no significant improvement or the nappy rash returns regularly, try using a different detergent, a different brand of nappies or gentler cosmetics.

Don't underestimate prevention

Of course, nappy rash can be successfully prevented. Loose, breathable clothing made from natural materials allows air to flow to the skin, preventing this unpleasant problem from occurring. When it comes to underwear, cotton is best.

It should be a matter of course to shower after any strenuous physical activity, use cosmetics that do not irritate the skin, and dry thoroughly after showering. However, avoid excessive hygiene, as this can actually increase the risk of unwanted nappy rash.
